Why twenty-six dots

On 18 December 1857, at dawn, sepoys of the 1857 uprising made their stand on a hillock at Latu, 20 km from Karimganj.

Twenty-six of them were left dead on the hill. Their names were never written down. The mark on every Malegarh piece is that hill, and one dot for each of them.
